Volume III · T

Tisri

TISRI, or Tizri, the first Hebrew Month of the Civil Year, and the seventh of the Ecclesiastical or Sacred Year. The Hebrews call it Rosh-hashanna,1 that is, the Beginning of the Year. It answered to the Moon of September. On the first Day of this Month was kept the Feast of Trumpets, because the Beginning of the Year was then proclaimed by the Sound of Trumpets. On this Day they refrained from all sorts of servile Business, and offered in Sacrifice a Calf, a Ram, and seven Lambs, Levit. xxiii. 24. Numb. xxix. 1.

‘Tis thought that Joshua died on the first Day of Tisri. The Sabbatical Years, and the Year of Jubilee, began on the same Day.

The Third was a Fast for the Death of 2 Kings xxv. 25. Jerem. xli. 2.Gedaliah the Son of Abikam, who was killed at Mizpah. The Fifth Day was a Fast for the Death of twenty of the chief Jewish Doctors; and particularly for that of Akiba.

The Eighth Day, the Dedication of Solomon’s Temple, which began on this Day, and continued for fourteen Days, to the 22d of the Month, 1 Kings viii. 35. 2 Chron. vii. 9. 10.The Tenth Day, the Feast of solemn Expiation, Levit. xvi. 29. xxiii. 29. See EXPIATION. The Fifteenth of Tisri, the Feast of Tabernacles. It continued seven Days, Levit. xxiii. 34. See TABERNACLE.

The twenty-third Day, the Jews keep the Feast which they call The Rejoicing for the Law. They give Thanks to God for having given it them; they read the Will and History of the Death of Moses, as it is found in Deuteronomy xxxiii, xxxiv.

Judith xvi. 7.At the End of this Dictionary the Reader will find the ancient Calender of the Jews.
