Samael

SAMAEL. This is the Name that the Rabboth. in Deuter. cap. ult. fol. 302.Rabbins, in their mystical Commentaries upon the Pentateuch, give to the Prince of the Devils, who expected, with great Impatience, the Hour of Moses’s Departure, that he might seize him, and carry him to the Place where the Dead are detained. But St. Michael reproved him, and said to him; O Wretch! shouldst thou be joyful, while I shed Tears? He quotes to him that Passage of Micah; Rejoyce not against me, O mine Enemy: When I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in Darkness, the Lord shall be a Light unto me. He added; I fell when Moses died; but I rose again when Joshua succeeded him, and led the Hebrews into the Land of Promise. See SAMMAEL.
