The Hebrews but rarely make use of concrete Terms, as they are call’d, but often of abstracted. Thus, instead of saying, that God saves them, and protects them; they say, that God is their Salvation. Thus, Vox salutis, gaudium salutis, rupes salutis, scutum salutis, sagitta salutis, veritas salutis, cornu salutis, verbum salutis, arx salutis, &c. is as much as to say, a Voice declaring Deliverance; the Joy that attends the escaping a great Danger; a Rock where any one takes Refuge, and where he may be in Safety from his Enemy; a Buckler that secures them from the Arms of the Enemy; an Arrow that procures Safety and Liberty to a whole People; a Truth that saves us; a Horn or Ray of Glory, of Happiness, and Salvation; the Glory that attends those who have escaped out of some great Danger, &c. Thus, Facere salutem magnam in Israel, signifies, to deliver the Israelites from some imminent Danger; to obtain a great Victory over their Enemies. Fieri, or, esse in salutem, is, to save, to protect any one. Ps. cv. 4. Ps. cxlix. 4. Ps. xlii. 5. Ps. xliii. 5.Magnificans salutes Regis, to bring a very powerful Succour to the King. Qui mandas salutes Jacob; Who commandest with Authority, and says, Let Jacob be safe, thou who savest him, and powerfully protectest him. Longè à salute meâ verba delictorum meorum1; My Sins cry against me, and prevent my Salvation. These were pacifick Sacrifices offered to God, either to return him Thanks for his Benefits, or to ask Favours, Protection, or Assistance from him. Fallax equus ad salutem; ‘Tis in vain that you put your Confidence in Horses; they cannot save you from Danger, without the Assistance of God. I preferr’d Wisdom before Safety or Beauty: Super salutem & speciem dilexi eam: Before Life, Health, and Beauty. Divitiæ salutis, sapientia & scientia; The Treasures of Salvation; or, according to the Hebrew, the Strength of Safeties, Wisdom and Knowledge, shall adorn the Kingdom of the Messiah. The Lord hath cloathed me with the Garments of Salvation; Induit me vestimentis salutis, & indumento justitiæ. These Garments of Salvation, may signify the Habits of Joy and Festivity, which were wore on Festival Days, and after the receiving any signal Favour from God, after a Deliverance from any great Danger. Erit tibi anima tua in salutem. The Hebrew says literally, Erit tibi anima tua in spolium; You shall escape Danger, and you shall save your Life, but not without Danger: Your Life shall be saved, but as a Part of the Prey is rescued; or, it shall be your Part of the Booty. Happy that you are deliver’d, even upon these Terms! You shall lose every thing else but your Life. Ezekiel says,2 Aquâ non est lota in salutem. Salutem. He speaks of a new-born Child, that had not been wash’d, nor salted, and whose Navel-string had not been cut. Probably, they imagined this contributed to Health, ad Salutem. The Hebrew reads; You have not been wash’d with Water, for solacing, for refreshing, and cleaning you.
