VAPHRES. This is the same as Pharaoh Hophra, of whom we have spoke elsewhere. See HOPHRA, and Jerem. xliv. 30. We find a Greek Letter of Solomon to Vaphres King of Egypt, in which Solomon notifies to him his succeeding to the Crown, and asks Workmen of him, to assist him in building a Temple to God. Vaphres returns an Answer to Solomon, congratulates him upon his Elevation to the Throne of Israel, and informs him, that he sent him fourscore thousand Artificers, to perform such Works as he should require. He tells him also the Names of the Provinces, from whence he had taken these Workmen. But these two Pieces do not deserve any Credit, tho’ they are taken out of Eupolemus, from whom Eusebius quotes them, and has inserted them in his Gospel-Preparation, ix. 31.
