II. STRATO; The Tower of Strato; A dark and obscure Place in the Royal Palace of Jerusalem, where Aristobulus, Son of John Hyrcanus King of the Jews, caus’d his Brother Antigonus to be kill’d, at his Return from an Expedition, wherein Antigonus had behaved himself with great Bravery. See the Articles of ANTIGONUS and ARISTOBULUS. One Judas of the Sect of the Essenians,1 who had foretold, that on that Day Antigonus should be put to Death in the Tower of Strato, seeing this young Prince return from the Expedition before mention’d, and knowing the Tower of Strato to be six hundred Furlongs from Jerusalem, resolved to live no longer, that he might not pass for a visionary Person and a false Prophet. But he was not aware that there was a Tower of Strato in the Palace, in which it was known soon after that Antigonus had been assassinated by the Order of his Brother, who thought he was coming to take away his Life.
