Volume II · S

Schinus

SCHINUS, or Schinum, a Lentisk or Mastick-Tree. This Word is found in Susanna, ver. 54. Daniel asked one of Susanna’s Accusers, under what Tree he had observed Susanna in the Company of her Lover? He answered, under a Mastick-Tree, Sub Schino. Daniel alluding to this Word, replied, The Angel of God hath received the Sentence of God, to cut thee in two: Schisai se. As this Allusion can take place only in the Greek, it gives reason to doubt, whether this Story of Susanna, in which it is read, was ever writ in Hebrew. See PRINUS before.
