Passion

Acts i. 3.PASSION. This Word has several Significations, very different from one another. First, it signifies the Passion or Suffering of Jesus Christ. To whom also he shewed himself alive after his Passion. It is also put for the Sufferings of the Saints.1 Magnum certamen sustinuistis passionum. Ye have suffered great Afflictions.2 Et non sunt condignæ passiones hujus temporis ad futuram gloriam. Secondly, it signifies Rom. i. 26.shameful Passions, passiones ignominiæ, to which they are given up, whom God abandons to their own Desires. And the Rom. vii. 5.Passions of Sin, passiones peccatorum, which act in our Members, to bring forth the Fruit of Death. The Passions of Desires, 1 Thess. iv. 5.passio desiderii, our evil Inclinations, the Motions of Concupiscence, to which the Heathen without any Scruple abandoned themselves.
