Nephtar

NEPHTAR. This is the Name that Nehemiah gave to the Place where the sacred Fire had been hid, and where they found a thick and muddy Water, which being sprinkled upon the Wood of the Altar, took Fire as soon as the Sun began to appear. This Word may be derived from the Chaldæan Petir1, pure, without Mixture; or, if we read Necphar, from the Hebrew Caphar2, to expiate, purify, or cleanse.
