Measure

MEASURE. We shall give by it self a general Table of the Weights and Measures, and also of the Money, of the antient Hebrews. Besides which we have shewn the Value of their Money, and the Contents of their Measures of Length and Capacity, under the particular Names of each. For Example, the Value of the Shekel and Talent under their Names, the Capacity of the Bath or Ephah under their Names; and so of the rest.

Men of Measure, of extraordinary Stature, procerae staturae, as St. Jerome translates it1; Thou feedest them with the Bread of Tears, and givest them Tears to drink in great Measure2. The Hebrew says in three Measures. Thou shalt drink also Water Mic. vi. 10.by Measure3. You shall not drink so much as you would desire to drink. And Micah, The scant Measure is abominable. The Hebrew says, An Ephah. ‘Tis known that the Ephah was a Measure of Capacity among the Hebrews.

John iii. 34. Rom. xii. 3. Ephes. iv. 7. 2 Cor. x. 13. Ephes. iv. 13.Our Saviour says in St. John, that God giveth not the Spirit by Measure. He gives it without Measure to his Son, but to others he gives it by Measure, as St. Paul tells us. According as God hath dealt to every Man the Measure of Faith. And elsewhere, But unto every one of us is given Grace, according to the Measure of the Gift of Christ. And again, speaking to the Corinthians, But we will not boast of Things without our Measure, but according to the Measure of the Rule, which God hath distributed us, a Measure to reach even unto you. And to the Ephesians, Till we all come — unto the Measure of the Stature of the Fullness of Christ. Till we all arrive at the Measure of the Age of the Fullness of Jesus Christ. Many have thought that the Age of the Fullness of Jesus Christ was the Age at which he died, and that we all shall arise at that Age. St. Jerome says4, that this is5 the Tradition of the Churches. Others understand it of that Perfection, at which we ought to endeavour, to form in our selves Jesus Christ in a perfect Age.

Isai. xxviii. 17.Isaiah says, Judgment also will I lay to xxvii. the Line, and Righteousness to the Plum-

  1. met. Ponam in pondere judicium, & justitiam in mensurâ. He will proportion his Corrections according to the Greatness of the Sins of the Wicked; and when their Crimes are excessive, he will break them to Pieces with the Weight of his Judgments, and will overwhelm them with the Measure of his Justice. And elsewhere; In Measure when it shooteth forth thou wilt debate with it. God has rejected the Enemies of his People, and has judged and punished them with a full and superabundant Measure.
