Judas (IX)

IX. JUDAS, firnamed the Essenian, is taken notice of for the gift of Prophecy Joseph. Antiq. l. xiii. c. 19.with which he was endowed. He foretold that Antigonus the Asmonæan, brother to King Aristobulus, should be killed upon a certain day in Strato’s tower. On the very day upon which he was to be put to death according to this Prophecy, this young Prince came to Jerusalem, very much elevated with a victory which he had just then obtained. Judas seeing him, said to his Disciples, I wish I were dead, since I must this day be a witness to the falshood of my predictions. How can Antigonus be killed to day at Strato’s tower, which is at the distance of above a day’s journey from this place? But he did not know that the spirit, which spoke in him, meant not Strato’s tower upon the Mediterranean, where afterwards Cæsarea of Palestine was built, but another Strato’s tower, which was in the palace, and where Antigonus was in reality killed soon after by King Aristobulus’s orders.
