GILBOA, a Mountain, celebrated for the defeat and death of Saul, and his son Jonathan. Eusebius and St. Jerom inform 1 Sam. xxxi. 1, 2, 3, &c.us, that this Mountain was six miles from Bethsan, otherwise Scythopolis, and that there was a large place still to be seen there, called Gelbus. William of Tyre says, Guil. Tyr. l. 22. c. 26.that at the foot of Mount Gilboa there is a spring, which runs near the City of Jezreel. David in that mournful song, which he made in honour of Saul and Jonathan, intimates, that this Mountain was fruitful. Ye Mountains of Gilboa, let 2 Sam. i. 6.there be no dew, neither let there be rain upon you, nor fields of offerings; for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, &c. These Mountains are said at present to be dry and barren.
