Dadan

DADAN, the second son of Raamah mentioned in Gen. x. 7: The Septuagint in this place read Dadan, and so does the Vulgate and the Hebrew; but in Gen. x. 4. instead of Dodanim they have it Rhodanim; and in Ezek. xxvii. 15. instead of Dedan they read the sons of the Rhodians. Josephus in Gen. x. 4. did not read Dodanim, nor does Joseph. Antiq. l. 1. c. 7. p. 14.he make any mention of this name. And in the same chapter, instead of Dadan he reads Judah, and says that this Judah is the father of certain Jews in the western part of Ethiopia; but the true reading of Gen x. 7. is Dadan. I cannot well tell whether Dedan If. xxi. 13. In semitis Dedenim. Jer. xxv. 23. xlix. 8. Ezek. xxv. 19. xxvii. 15, 20. xxxviii. 13. Jer. xxv. 23. Ezek. xxvii. 23.and Dedanim, names often repeated in Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel, is the same with Dodanim, spoken of in Gen. x. 4. among the descendants of Japheth; or whether he is the same with Dadan mentioned in the same chapter, v.7. among the descendants of Ham; or whether Dedan is not rather a descendant of Dadan, the son of Jokshan, and grandson of Abraham and Kethurah. It must be observed, that in the Hebrew text which is not pointed, the names of Dodan, Dadan, and Dedan are written in the same manner. Arias Montanus places the descendants of Dadan in the Palmyrene, where we find the mountain Aladan, or Alladadan. Bochart places Dadan in Arabia the happy, to the west of Raamah. This country is still called Dadena, the capital City whereof is Dadan.
