II. BABYLON of Egypt. Diodorus Siculus fixes the original of it to the time of Sesostris1. He says, that the captives carried by this Prince from Babylon, fortified themselves in this place, and built a City of the same name with that, where they were born. Ctesias, who is cited in the same Diodorus, relates, that the Babylonians who came with Semiramis into Egypt, founded Babylon; but Josephus v is much more credible when he says, that this City was not built till the time of Cambyses, and that it owes its original to some Persians, to whom this Prince gave the ground hereabouts, and permitted them to settle there. Some modern Criticks have supposed, that S. Peter wrote his first Epistle from this Babylon in Egypt; which opinion we have confuted in a particular Dissertation, prefixed to the last Tome of our Commentary.
