ATHENOBIUS, Son of Demetrius, was sent by Antiochus Sidetes King of 1 Macc. xv. 28.Syria, to Simon Maccabæus, to command him to surrender the Cities of Joppa, Gazara, and the Fortress of Jerusalem, which were in his possession; to pay him tribute for the Cities which he held out of Judæa, and to indemnify him for the great waste which he had made upon the lands belonging to the Dominions of the King of Syria. He demanded five hundred talents of Silver, to repair these damages; and five hundred more for tribute which he pretended was due. Simon answered Athenobius, that he had robb’d the King of none of his Patrimony; and that for the places which the King required to have restored to him, they had been taken by the Jews, with an intention to secure themselves from the continual mischiefs which they did them: that notwithstanding, he was ready to give the King an hundred talents for these places. Athenobius hereupon returned with great indignation to the siege of Dora, where Antiochus was, and reported Simon’s answer. Antiochus sent Cendebeus against him, who did nothing very remarkable. He was defeated and put to flight by the two Sons of Simon the High Priest, 1 Macc. xvi. 1, 2, & seq.
