Athar

ATHAR, a City in the Tribe of Simeon, Josh. xix. 7. St. Jerom speaks of a place called Atharus, four miles North from Sebasta, or Samaria; but this is too remote from the Tribe of Simeon. It is my opinion, that Athar is the same as Ether, or Jether, which was at first given to the Tribe of Judah, and afterwards yielded to that of Simeon. Ethar and Asan are joined together, Josh. xv. 42. as are Athar and Asan, Josh. xix. 7. Now Ether, or Jether, or Pethira, was in the times of Eusebius and St. Jerom1, a large Town, eighteen miles from Eleutheropolis, in the Southern part of Judah, towards Malatis.
