ARCH-TRIUMPHAL. It is said in the first Book of Samuel, that Saul after 1 Sam. xv. 12.the defeat of the Amalekites erected a triumphal Arch on Carmel: Eo quod venisset Saul in Carmelum, & erexisset sibi fornicem triumphalem. The Hebrew imports, that he lifted up an hand, that is to say, a monument. We do not know what nature or form this monument was of. But it was probably some heap of stones or column to preserve the memory of his victory over Amalek. The Author of the Hebrew Traditions on the Books of Kings says, that Saul’s triumphal Arch was composed of branches of myrtle, palm and olive-trees.
