On the day after the Israelites had prayed and received the divine response, all, quite early in the morning, came to cast lots before the ark of the covenant, or [rather] approached the court of the tabernacle; and among the first, the Leader himself, Joshua (v. 16) — always the most diligent of all, always earlier than all. But the lot, according to Abulensis, seems to have been cast into the urn by slips [of paper], and drawn. And it is probable, though not certain — just as [it is] uncertain by whom the same [lots were] cast, mixed, and drawn, as Masius rightly says.
