This chapter comprises three [things]: 1. those [things] which, the Jordan being still divided and open, were done. 2. in what manner it [the Jordan] was closed, and loosed [back] into its unwonted course. 3. those [things] which, [the river] being closed and relaxed [back], were done. In the first [there] are four [heads]: 1. certain [matters] about the stones taken up from the Jordan, and others set up in it, [extending] up to v. 10; then about the priests, vv. 10, 11; 3. about the people — whether the whole, or a part of it — v. 12; 4. finally, about Joshua himself, vv. 14, 15, 16, 17; but these latter are plain from ch. 1. Concerning the others, certain [things] are to be inquired.
