1. When they had crossed over, the Lord said to Joshua: 2. Choose twelve men, one from each tribe: 3. And command them to take up from the middle of the channel of the Jordan, where the feet of the priests stood, twelve very hard stones, which you shall set in the place of the camp, where you shall pitch [your] tents this night. 4. And Joshua called twelve men, whom he had chosen from the sons of Israel, one from each tribe. 5. And he said to them: Go before the ark of the Lord your God to the middle of the Jordan, and carry thence, each [of you], a single stone on your shoulders, according to the number of the sons of Israel, 6. that it may be a sign among you: and when your sons shall ask you tomorrow, saying: What do these stones mean to you? 7. You shall answer them: The waters of the Jordan failed before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, when it passed over it: therefore these stones were set as a monument of the sons of Israel forever. 8. The sons of Israel therefore did as Joshua commanded them, carrying from the middle of the channel of the Jordan twelve stones, as the Lord had bidden him, according to the number of the sons of Israel, as far as the place in which they encamped, and there they set them. 9. Joshua also put twelve other stones in the middle of the channel of the Jordan, where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood: and they are there to the present day. 10. Now the priests who carried the ark stood in the middle of the Jordan, until all was fulfilled which the Lord had commanded Joshua to speak to the people, and Moses had said to him. And the people hastened and crossed over. 11. And when all had crossed, the ark of the Lord also crossed, and the priests went before the people. 12. The sons of Ruben also, and Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh, went armed before the sons of Israel, as Moses had commanded them: 13. And forty thousand fighting men, by troops and squadrons, advanced through the plains and champaign [fields] of the city of Jericho. 14. In that day the Lord magnified Joshua before all Israel, that they should fear him, as they had feared Moses, while he lived. 15. And he said to him: [16.] Command the priests, who carry the ark of the covenant, to come up out of the Jordan. 17. And he commanded them, saying: Come up out of the Jordan. 18. And when they had come up, carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and had begun to tread the dry ground, the waters returned into their channel—

You shall teach them, and shall say: Israel crossed this Jordan through the dry channel, 23. the Lord your God drying up its waters in your sight, until you crossed over: 24. as he had done before in the Red Sea, which he dried up until we crossed: 25.
