CCXI. Corollary VI

COROLLARY VI.

Those things which pertain to the salvific will of God and the amplitude of the order of restoration are so closely joined with hope and with the doctrine of repentance that the consensus which existed concerning them could not but have been most widely known and employed after the manner of a norm to which the method of administering repentance and imparting reconciliation was conformed. And it was indeed most widely known, since it was expressed in homilies1, catecheses2, and even poems themselves3; whence it became known not only to Christians but even to the Gentiles themselves4. Moreover, in the Church it was customarily held as a rule5 by which perverse opinions concerning the administration of repentance and the conferral of reconciliation were condemned. Wherefore it was also proper to this consensus that it should be known and ascertained both to pastors and doctors and to the flocks and Christian people.
