WORD, Verbum. The Word of God, Verbum Domini, is taken either for that internal Word that was heard by the Prophets by the Inspiration of God, or which they heard externally when God spoke to them, as when he spoke to Moses, Exodus xxxiii. 11.Face to Face, or as one Friend speaks to another; or for that Word which the Ministers of God, the Priests, the Apostles, the Servants of God declare from him and in his Name to the People. When Ehud the Judge of Israel came into the Apartment of Eglon King of Moab, he said to him, Sir, I Judg. iii. 19, 20.have a secret Commission to impart to you from God. At which this Prince rose from his Throne out of respect, and ordered all his Attendants to go out. Lastly, the Word of God is taken for what is written in the sacred Books of the Old and New Testament; besides which there is another kind of the Word of God, which is handed down to us by the Canal of constant Tradition. We have spoken of the Traditions of the Jews, under the Articles CABALA, and BATH-COL, or Daughter of the Voice; and of that of Christians, under the Article TRADITION.
