Wine of Libation

WINE of Libation,1 Vinum Libaminum, was the most excellent Wine, such as was poured out upon the Victims in the Temple of the Lord. Or it was pure Wine, because in Libations they used no Mixtures.

The Wicked eat the Bread of Impiety, Prov. iv. 17.and drink the wine of iniquity. That is to say, they are maintained with ill-gotten Goods, or they abuse the good things that God gives them; they offend him by the bad use they make of the Necessaries of Life.

The WINE of Uprightness, of which there is mention in some Passages of the Canticles,2 was good Wine, true and excellent Wine. St. Jerome has translated the Hebrew of the Proverbs, xxiii. 30. by Vinum quod ingreditur blandè, instead of Vinum rectitudinum, as is insinuated by Horat. l.1. Ep. 15.the Text. Horace has well expressed this Thought in those Verses;

----- generosum & lene requiro,
Quod curas abigat, quod cum spe divite manet
In venas animumque meum.
