Wine of Astonishment

Psalm lxxv. 8.WINE of Astonishment, which is mentioned in the Psalms,1 may represent the Cup of the Anger of God, with which he inebriates all the Wicked; or, rather, according to the Hebrew, the Cup of the Wine of Affliction, impregnated with its Lees. God threatens great Sinners to make them drink up his Cup, even to the Dregs, even to the last Drop. The Hebrew might also be translated, Wine of trembling, that gives Death, that poisons, that stupifies. The Septuagint translate it, Wine that stings inwardly, that causes Affliction or Compunction: Aquila, Wine of Stupefaction: Symmachus, Wine of Agitation or Disturbance.
