VOCATION. This Term has been appropriated 2 Tim. chiefly to denote the Grace of i. 9. our Calling to the Christian Faith and Reli-Rom. viii. 30. gion; a Vocation which is entirely gratuitous on the part of God; since, as St. Paul says, He hath saved us, and called us with an holy Calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace which was given us in Jesus Christ, before the world began. The Grace of Predistination precedes that of Vocation, and that of Vocation goes before that of Justification. Such is the Chain and Connexion of the Graces that God vouchsafes us, to bring us to Salvation: Whom he did predestinate, them he also called; and whom he called, them he also justified; and whom he justified, them be also glorified. It is our part, being assisted by the help of God, to make our Calling sure, by the Practice of good Works; and to live in a Manner that may 1 Pet. i. be suitable to that State to which we have 20. been called; for our Saviour tells us, that 2 Thess. there are many called, but few chosen. i. 11.
