Tables of Reduction of the Hebrew Coins, Weights, and Measures, to Our Own

The Preface to the Reduction of the Jewish and Hebrew Coins to our own.

WHEN I began my Labours upon the Bible, I was aware of the Necessity I was under, of giving my Readers some fix’d and determinate Notions about the Value and Weight of the Hebrew Money, and about the Magnitude and Capacity of their Measures. But when I came to determine myself in the Choice of my Sentiments, I found myself in great Perplexity, because of that very great Variety I found among the several Authors that had treated of this matter. To endeavour to reconcile them, was to attempt an Impossibility; to enter upon a new Discussion, would have been to plunge myself into an infinite Labour, of which I did not think myself capable. I therefore took up the Resolution to follow a Guide, and to follow him as closely as I could M. le Pellitier of Roan, with whom I was acquainted, seem’d to me to be most of an Original, as well as the most exact. I procured from him the Result of a large Work which he had composed, concerning the Weights, Coins, and Measures, both of Length and Capacity, of the ancient Hebrews; and tho his great Work had not yet been publish’d, he sent me an Abstract of it. I printed it before my Commentary upon Genesis, and have every where follow’d it, bating some very small Matters.

When I was about to publish my new Dictionary of the Bible, I valued the ancient Hebrew Money by our Livres, Sols, and Deniers; imagining by that I should do something very acceptable to such, as not having any great Skill in Arithmetick, might yet be glad to know, at once, the Value of any Sum of Shekels or Talents, that they might meet with in the Text of Scripture.

But having since consider’d, that the method of reckoning by Livres, Sols, and Deniers, was introduced under Philip the Fair, King of France; that before his Reign, not only in France but elsewhere, Commerce was carry’d on only in Marks of Gold and Silver; that the Jews, Greeks, and Romans, distinct and settled Idea of their traded, received, and pay’d by Value, to these Evaluations I Weight, and that the Terms of thought it proper to join Tables Livres, Sols and Deniers, are un- of Reduction of their Weight, to certain and equivocal, by reason of that of our Mark, which hitherto the Changes that often happen in has suffer’d no Variation. our Species, and therefore give no
