TROAS, a City of Phrygia, or of Mysia, upon the Hellespont, between the City of Troy to the North, and the City of Assos to the South. Sometimes the Name of Troas signifies the whole Country of the Trojans, the Province where the City of Troy stood. But in the New Testament, wherein the Word Troas is found, it always signifies a particular City of that Name, which also sometimes is called by the Names of Antigonia, and Alexandria: Ipsa Troas, Antigonia dicta, nunc Alexandria, Plin. l. 5. c. 30.says Pliny. Sometimes both Names are joined, Alexandria-Troas. St. Paul was at Acts xvi. 8, &c.Troas in the Year 52 of the Vulgar Æra, and had this Vision in the Night: A Man of Macedonia stood before him, and made this Request to him: Come over to Macedonia, and assist us. He embarked therefore at Troas, and passed over into Macedonia. This Man that appeared to him, is supposed to be the Guardian Angel of Macedonia, who invited him to preach in that Kingdom. Besides this, the Apostle was several other times at Troas; but we know nothing particular of his Transactions there. See Acts xx. 5, 6. 2 Cor. ii. 14. He left behind1 hind him at Troas, in the custody of one Carpus, some Cloaths and Books, which he desired Timothy to bring along with him to Rome, when he came thither, in the Year 65 of the Vulgar Æra, a little before St. Paul’s Death, which happened in the Year 66. See 2 Tim. iv. 13.
