TORTA PANIS. These two Latin Words signify a Biscuit, or Cake, made of Flour and Figgs, kneaded up with Water: Panis ex pinguibus palmulis, farina, & Erotian. in Onomatico.aqua confectus. Others think it to be a Cake, a Tart, or Pye; in general, some piece of Pastry.1 But in the Scripture it stands for a Loaf, and answers to the Hebrew Word Ciccar,2 which signifies a great and massy Lump, and which is also used to stand for a Talent, which is the heaviest piece of Metal, and of the greatest Value, that was used in Traffick. Some will have it, that Ciccar in Hebrew, and Torta in Latin, stand for a Piece of Bread: But we think it always signifies a whole Loaf.
