Tobias (3)

  1. TOBIAS, Brother-in-law to the High-Priest Onias II. Father of Joseph, and Grandfather of Hyrcanus, mentioned by Josephus, Antiq. l. 12. c. 4. p. 401, &c. This Tobias is but little known, but his Son Joseph, and his Grandson Hyrcanus, are very well known in History. The Second 2 Macc. iii. 11.Book of the Maccabees gives Hyrcanus the Surname of Tobias, when it says, that when Heliodorus came to Jerusalem from King Seleucus, to take away the Treasures of the Temple,1 it was represented to him, that the greatest part of this Money belonged to Hyrcanus-Tobias, a Man of great Dignity and Consideration, whom Seleucus had made the Receiver of his Tributes in all the Country beyond Jordan.
