Titus (2)

  1. TITUS, surnamed Justus, a Native of Corinth, and Host to St. Paul in this City. We read in the Acts, that St. Paul went out of the House of Aquila, where he Acts xviii. 7.lodged before, and entered into the House of one Titus Justus, who feared God, and whose House joined to the Synagogue. As if he intended to shew, that if he abandoned the Jews, ‘twas not without Reluctance, and that he was always ready to return to them again, if they would but relinquish their Stubbornness, and the Hardness of their Hearts. Some Greek Manuscripts read only Titus, without Justus: Others read, Titus the Son of Justus. St. Chrysostome1 and Grotius were of opinion, that this Titus was the same as he who was made Bishop of Crete, and to whom St. Paul has addressed one of his Epistles. But the contrary Opinion, which distinguishes these two Persons, has generally prevailed. We know nothing particular concerning Titus Justus.
