TIRHAKAH, or Tharaca, King of Ethiopia; that is to say, of the Land of Cush, bordering upon Palestine and Egypt. This Prince took the Field, at the Head of a powerful Army, to come to relieve Hezekiah, who was then besieged by Sennacherib.1 Sennacherib was then engaged at the Siege of Lachish; yet he raised the Siege, and went out to meet him. But the Angel of the Lord smote his Army that Night, and killed of them to the number of eighty-five thousand Men. It does not appear that this Prince had given Tirhakah Battel; his Army was routed before he came up to him. Tirhakah is called Thearchon by Strabo. Strab. l. 1. p. 653.This Geographer quotes Megasthenes, who related, that this Prince had carried his Conquests as far as Europe, and even to the Pillars of Hercules.
