TILGATH-PILNESER, or Theglat- Phalassar, King of Assyria, Son and Successor of Sardanapalus; he began to reign at Niniveh, in the Year of the World 3257, before Christ 743, before the Vulgar Æra 747. By profane Writers he is generally called Ninus Junior. Ahaz King of Judah, finding himself vigorously attacked by Resin King of Syria, and by Pekah King of Israel, and knowing himself not strong enough to oppose them,2 sent Ambassadors to Tilgath-pilneser, to desire his Assistance against the Kings of Syria and Samaria. At the same time he sent him all the Gold and Silver that was found in the Treasuries of the

the Temple, and in those of his own Palace. Tilgath-pilneser therefore marched against Rezin, killed him, plundered Damascus, and sent away the Inhabitants to other Places upon the River Cyrus. Ahaz went to meet this Prince as far as 2 Chron. xxviii. 20, 21.Damascus; but Tilgath-pilneser was not satisfied with what Ahaz had given him, but entered into Judæa, where he found no Opposition, and ravaged the whole Country. He did the same thing in the Country of Samaria, carried away the Tribes of Reuben and Gad, and the half Tribe of 1 Chron. v. 26.Manasseth, and transplanted them to Halah, Habor, and Hara, upon the River Gezan. He took also the Cities Ijon, Abelbeth-maachah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Galilee, and the Countries of Gilead, and 2 Kings xv. 29.Napthali, and carried away the Inhabitants into Assyria. After that Tilgath-pilneser had reigned nineteen Years at Nineveh, he died, in the Year of the World 3276, before Christ 724, before the Vulgar Æra 728. He had for Successor his Son Shalmaneser.
