Thallus

THALLUS.1 We read this Word in the Second Book of Maccabees, xiv. 4. Super hæc2 & Thallos, qui templi esse videbantur. But Thallus signifies a Rod or Staff surrounded with green Branches, or otherwise mere Branches of the Olive-tree, or any other Tree. From whence came the Word Thallophori, who were Children or old Men, who carry’d these kind of Branches, or Wands surrounded with green Leaves, or Sprigs of Olive, in honour of Pallas or Minerva.
