Tetrarch

Τετράρχης. Tetrarcha.TETRARCH, Tetrarcha. This Word, according to the Force of the Greek, signifies a Lord that hath the fourth part of a State, Province, or Kingdom, under his Dominion, without wearing the Diadem, or bearing the Title of King. The Word Tetrarch is sometimes found in Scripture,1 and was frequent among the Descendants of Herod the Great, among whom the Emperors of Rome distributed his Demesnes at their Pleasure. But the Words Tetrarch and Tetrarchy ought not to be understood in a rigorous Sense, though indeed they signify but a fourth Part of a Kingdom or Province. The Name Tetrarch was given to him that possessed sometimes an Half, sometimes a third Part. Oftentimes also the Name of King was given to him who was but a Tetrarch, and that of Kingdom to a Tetrarchy.
