SWORD. In the Stile of the Hebrews, the Sword is often us’d for War. The Lord shall send the Sword into the Land; he shall cause War to come. The Mouth of the Sword, is the Edge of the Sword. A Man that draws the Sword; educens gladium, is a Soldier by Profession. The Sword of the Job v. 15.Mouth; Gladius oris, is pernicious Discourse, Accusations, Slander, Calumny. Manus gladii, the Hand of an armed Soldier. Psal. lvi. 5. Ps. vii. 12.Their Tongue is a two-edged Sword; the Tongue of the Wicked is more dangerous than the Sword. If he turn not, he will whet his Sword: he will send War, or will strike him with his Wounds. Gladius ancepsPs. cxlix. 6. Ex. xx. 25. Gen. xxvii. 40., a two-edged Sword. To lift the Sword upon the Stones, is to cut them with a Chisel or other Instrument. By thy Sword shalt thou live, thou shalt support thyself by War and Rapine. Nation shall not lift Isa. ii. 4.up Sword against Nation, shall not make War, smite, wound, or kill. Or this is a kind of Proverb: Those that take the Sword to smite another, generally suffer by it themselves. The Word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged Sword: It penetrates even to the Bottom of the Soul, and insinuates it self into the Heart and Mind. St. Paul exhorts the Eph. vi. 17.Ephesians, to arm themselves with the Word of God, as with a spiritual Sword, to defend themselves against all the Enemies of their Souls.
