Shunammite

SHUNAMMITE, or Sunamite, a Daughter or Woman born at Shunem. This Surname was given to Abishag the Spouse of David, whom he marry’d in his old Age, 1 Kings i. 2, 15. ii. 17, 21, 22. 2 Kings iv. 12, 25, 36. Can. vi. 13. vii. 1.to keep him warm. It was given also to the Hostess of Elisha, who was used to entertain this Prophet when he came to Shunem. Lastly, it is given to the Spouse in the Canticles, because of a corrupt Reading, which has Sunamitis instead of Sulamitis. See SHULAMITE.
