SHELAH, or Sela, Son of Judah. Judah having successively given his two Sons Onan and Er to Tamar, and God having put them to Death because of their Wickedness; Judah bid Tamar continue a Widow, till his third Son Shelah should grow up. But Judah having no mind to give him to Tamar for a Husband, for fear the same should happen to him as to his Brothers; wherefore she went in to Judah, as may be seen under the Articles TAMAR or JUDAH. Shelah was Chief of the Family of the Shelanites. Numb. xxvi. 20.
