I. SHAMMAI, Sammai, or Sameas, Son of Rekem, and Father of Maon, 1 Chron. ii. 44. Rekem is the same as Petra, the capital City of Arabia Petrea. Maon is also a City of the same Canton. Maon is near Beth-shur, another City on the Southern Part of Judah. These Genealogies of Cities, are to shew the People that first inhabited them.
