Seleucus Philopator (IV)

IV. SELEUCUS Philopator, or Soter, Son of Antiochus the Great: He reigned twelve Years, from the Year of the World1 3816, to the Year 3828, before Christ 172, before the Vulgar Era 176. ‘Twas he that sent Heliodorus to Jerusalem, to take away the Treasures of the Temple2. This History may be seen under the Title HELIODORUS, and in the Second Book of the Maccabees, chap. iii. 3, &c. where it is said, that under the Reign of this Prince Judea enjoy’d a profound Peace, insomuch that Seleucus himself furnish’d the Sacrifices of the Temple at his own Cost and Charge.
