I. SEIR, or Sehir, the Horite, whose Gen.xiv.6. & xxxvi. 20. Deut. ii. 12.Dwelling was to the East and South of the Dead-sea, in the Mountains of Seir, where at first reign’d the Descendants of Seir the Horite, of whom Moses gives us the List in Gen. xxxvi. 20, 21, — 30. See also 1 Chron. 38, 39, &c. The Posterity of Esau afterwards were in Possession of the Mountains Gen.xxxii. 3.& xxxiii. 14. & xxxvi. 8,9. Deut. ii. 12.of Seir, and Esau himself dwelt there when Jacob return’d from Mesopotamia. Moses acquaints us, that Esau made War with the Horites, and utterly destroyed them; but we know none of the Particulars of these Wars. As to Seir the Father of the Horites, he must needs be very ancient, since the Horites or Chorites his Children were already a powerful and numerous People in Gen.xiv.6.the Time of Abraham, before the Birth of Isaac, when Chedorlaomer and his Confederates came to make War with the Kings of Pentapolis1. ‘Tis without good Reason, what some have advanced, that Esau himself had born the Name of Seir, or the Hairy2; for he was never known by this Name, tho’ his Country is often call’d the Country of Seir, because of the first Inhabitants that dwelt there.
