II. SEGUB. Hiel of Bethel having undertaken to rebuild Jericho, God punish’d him for it, by the Death of Abiram his first-born Son, who died as he was laying the Foundations of it; and also, by the Death of Segub his younger Son, who had the 1 Kings xvi. 34.same Fate when he hung up the Gates of the City. And this was in pursuance of the Imprecation that Joshua made,1 about five hundred and thirty-three Years before, against him that should rebuild it; Cursed be the Man before the Lord, that riseth up and buildeth this City Jericho. He shall lay the Foundation thereof in his First-born, and in his youngest Son shall he set up the Gates of it.
