SARABALLA. It is said in Daniel, a that when the three Hebrews were cast into the fiery Furnace, the Fire did them no Harm, and that their Saraballa, their Coats, or Mantles, remain’d unhurt : Saraballa eorum sunt immutata. The Word Saraballa is Chaldean, and it is read in the Original of Nebuchadnezzar’s Edict, Dan. iii. 21. Aquila, Theodotion, and SymmachusTertull. de Pallia, c. 4. Trinit. have read Sarabara. Tertullian reads the same ; he says, that Alexander the Great was not ashamed to quit the military Habit of the Greeks, and to put on the Sarabara of the conquered Nations. These Sarabara were a kind of Breeches, or Bandage, that were wrapt about the Thighs and Legs. Sarabara is found also for an Ornament of the Head. See Salmasius upon Tertullian, de Pallio, c. 4. and Monf. du Cange’s Glossary.
