Salem (VI)

VI. SALEM, the City where Melchisedech reigned. St. Jerome,1 the Author of the Chronicon Paschale, and2 M. Reland,3 think this City was different from Jerusalem. St. Jerome places it in the Territory of Scythopolis, where the Ruins of it were still to be seen in his Time, which were said to have been the Palace of Melchisedech. We are of Opinion with Josephus, and the Generality of the Fathers and Interpreters, that Melchisedech reigned at Jerusalem. See the Article of JERUSALEM before.
