SADAI, Shadai, or Saddai1. This is one of the Names of God among the Hebrews, which the Septuagint and St. Jerom generally translate by Almighty. It is most Numbers xxiv. 4, 16. Ruth i. 21. Job vi. 4.commonly put alone. For Example, Which saw the Vision of the Almighty, or Shadai. The Almighty (or Shadai) hath afflicted me. The Arrows of the Almighty (or Shadai) are within me. Job makes more frequent Use of this Word, than any other of the sacred Writers. It is not at all found in the Books of Solomon. Sometimes it is join’d with the Word El, which is another Name of God, El-Shadai, God-Almighty. It should seem that the Word Sadai is derived from the Hebrew Sadad, or Shadad, which signifies to ravage, to ruin, to pillage; as much as to say, God the Destroyer, the God of Devastation. Or, according to another Derivation, it may be render’d, the God of the Fields, or the God of Nipples.
