SACRILEGE, Sacrilegium. The Action of one that prophanes holy Things, or that commits any Outrage against Persons consecrated to God. The Theft, the Abuse, the Prophanation of sacred Things is Sacrilege. The Scripture gives the Name of Sacrilege to Idolatry, and to other Crimes that more directly insult the Deity. And he is call’d Sacrilegious, Sacrilegus, that commits a Sacrilege, an Impiety, a Prophanation of holy Things; who usurps the Priesthood, who approaches the Sacraments unworthily, who plunders or pillages Things that are dedicated to God.
