Volume II · S

Sabec

SABEC. In Genesis1, instead of what we read in the Vulgate2. Abraham saw a Ram intangled by its Horns in a Ticket; Vidit arietem inter vepres hærentem cornibus. The Septuagint and Theodotion read, He saw a Ram caught by its Horns in the Bush Sabec. Philo, Eucherius, Diodorus, as well as the Septuagint and Theodotion, have taken the Hebrew Word Sabec for a particular Species of Shrubs. Eusebius of Emesa thinks, that Sabec signifies a Goat, because of its upright Horns. But the best Interpreters translate this Word by, Branches of Thorns and Briars entangled in one another.
