Ps. vii. 10. Wisd. i. 6.REI. St. Jerom has understood this Word, 1 Kings i. 8. as if it signify’d some General of the Troops, or some chief Officer of the House of David. Semei, & Rei, & robur exercitus David, non erat cum Adonia.1 The Septuagint have taken it in the same Sense. The Author of the Hebrew Traditions upon the Books of Samuel, the Kings, and Chronicles, will have Shimei to be the same as Nebat, Father to Jeroboam, and Governor to Solomon; and that Rei is the same as Ira, the Jairite, a chief Ruler about David, 2 Sam. xx. 26. The Hebrew2 may be thus translated: Shimei and Rei, or Shomei and Roei may be the Hearers and Seers; that is, the Publick, all Israel, or those that acted with Circumspection, and knew the Intentions of the King. Or lastly, the Prophets and their Disciples, the Seers and their Auditors. Some Greek Copies read, Shimei and his Companions or Friends.
