RAPHAIM, or Rephaim. This Word is appropriated to those Giants, who lived in the Holy Land before the Arrival of the Hebrews in that Country. There are some Passages of Scripture, wherein this Term is Ps. lxxxvii. 11.translated by Physicians. For Example, Numquid mortuis facies mirabilia, aut medici suscitabunt & confitebuntur tibi. The Hebrew has, Wilt thou make thy Miracles to display themselves among the Dead, and shall the Rephaim arise to declare thy Praise? But St. Jerome commonly translates this Word by Gigantes, Giants, and the Scripture often mentions Hell where the Rephaim groan, and whither the Wicked, the Impious, and the Shameless descend. See the Article GIANTS.
