QUINTILIUS VARUS. It is not positively known whether or no Quintilius Varus was Governor of Syria the Year of our See Not. 4 of M. de Tillemont, upon J. C. tom. 1. p. 447.Saviour’s Birth, but however this is the general Opinion. He governed this Province with great Wisdom and Moderation to the time of the Banishment of Archelaus, in the sixth Year of Christ. He succeeded Saturninus in the Government of Syria, and had for Successor Quirinius or Cyrenius. Varus presided in the Assembly in which Antipater Son of Herod was judged.1 He supported the Interests of Archelaus, another of Herod’s Sons, before Augustus,2 that he might obtain the Kingdom of Judea. He afterwards appeased the Troubles that had been raised in the Country, by the Avarice of Sabinus.3 Lastly, being recalled from his Government of Syria, he and his whole Army perished in Germany, in the ninth Year of Jesus Christ.4 Augustus tore his Cloaths at this News, and let his Beard and Hair grow for several Months; so much he laid this Loss to Heart.
