Plain

PLAIN. In Palestine we find two large Vales, known to Historians and Geographers by the Name of Plains. One is extended along the Jordan from Tiberias to Segor or Seor, about the Length of Twelve hundred Joseph. Antiq. l. 9. c. 11. & de Bello, l. 5. c. 4.Furlongs, and the Breadth One hundred and twenty Furlongs. The other is call’d the Plain or the Field of Esdraelon or Legio, because 2 Chron. iv. 17.of these Cities standing in it; or the Valley of Jezreel, because of the City of Jezreel. It reaches from East to West, from Scythopolis standing upon the Jordan, to Legion at the Foot of Carmel, the Length of about five and twenty Leagues. Eusebius and Euseb. & Hieron. Onomast. in Αὐλῶν.St. Jerom give still a larger Extent to the great Plain that lies upon the Jordan; because, they say, it begins from Libanus, and reaches to the Wilderness of Paran. The Valley or Plain of Jericho was in this great Plain, and made a Part of it, as may be seen Eusebius in ‘Εγγαδδί.from Eusebius. These great Plains are sometimes call’d, the Plains of Aulon, or Aulos, or Araba.
