Psal. xvi. 5. Ps. cxlii. 5.PART, Portion. The Lord is the Portion of mine Inheritance. Thou art my Refuge and my Portion in the Land of the Living. And on the contrary, Israel is the Part or Portion of the Lord, his peculiar Deut. xxxii. 9.People. The Lords Portion is his People, Jacob is the Lot of his Inheritance. But with this Difference, that God makes and constitutes the Happiness of his People, but his People cannot contribute any thing to his Happiness or Glory.
Job xx. 29. Psal. lxiii. 10. Psal. xi. 6.Part or Portion also signifies Recompence, or Correction. This is the Portion of a wicked Man from God, and the Heritage appointed unto him by God. They shall be a Portion for Foxes. Upon the Wicked shall reign Snares, Fire, and Brimstone, and an horrible Tempest; this shall be the Portion of their Cup. This is their Part or Portion, and the just Punishment of their Iniquity. The Lord shall appoint him his Portion with the Hypocrites. God will treat him as he does the Hypocrites.
Part or Portion is also used for the Share that a Son may claim in the Inheritance of Luke xv. 12. Eccl. ii. 10. Eccl. iii. 22.his Father. Father, give me the Portion of Goods that falleth to me. And Solomon, This was my Portion of all my Labour. And elsewhere, There is nothing better than that a Man should rejoice in his own Works; for that is his Portion.
Eccl. xiii. 22. 2 Sam. xx. 1.Quæ pars diviti ad pauperem? What has the Rich to do with the Poor? Non est nobis pars in David. We have no Share in David, we have nothing to do with him. And elsewhere, Quæ nobis pars in David? What have we to do with David?
